Kauaʻi Resilient: Moving Forward After Hurricane Lowell

Kauaʻi is steadily finding its rhythm again following Hurricane Lowell. Across the island, power is being restored, schools and public facilities are reopening, roads and neighborhoods are being cleared, and families and businesses are getting back to their routines. There is still important recovery work underway—particularly in some of our North Shore communities—but each day is bringing meaningful progress.  

Perhaps the most encouraging part has been seeing Kauaʻi’s familiar sense of community in action. Neighbors, utility crews, first responders, volunteers and businesses have stepped up to help one another, echoing the resilience the island has shown after storms in the past. As Mayor Derek Kawakami noted while marking the anniversary of Hurricane ʻIniki, Kauaʻi rebuilt then because people showed up for one another—and that same spirit is very much present today. There is still work ahead, but Kauaʻi is moving forward together.
